Preventative maintenance for your electrical panel?

Many homeowners don’t realize that the electrical panel is not maintenance free, perhaps due to being “out of sight out of mind.”

Your electrical panel and its components are a very important part of your home.

Regular inspection and preventative maintenance performed by a licensed electrician is more cost effective than making repairs as components fail.

You should have your home’s panel inspected on a yearly basis for loose connections.

Loose connections can cause service interruption and can be a fire hazard.

If you are regularly re-setting a breaker you most likely have a problem. When you regularly reset the breaker it heats up. This causes wire damage and in extreme cases can cause a fire.

A licensed electrician can tighten loose connections and maintain your panel so you can avoid such problems.

Electrical Tips

| Stay safe!

Our homes are filled with things that run on electricity. They make our lives easier, but every year, more than 50,000 home fires are started by electrical problems. You can protect your family by taking these steps:

  • Electrical plugs and heater cords should never feel hot to the touch.
  • Electrical panels and breakers should never feel hot to the touch.
  • If you are using extension cords instead of wiring, consider upgrading.
  • As you renovate your home it is important to rewire.  If your home has old aluminum wiring it is safer to rewire.
  • Keep electric heaters at least four (4) feet from furniture and drapes. Electric heaters should be on a dedicated circuit.
  • Never go to sleep with a heating pad or space heater turned on.
  • Never place appliance cords where they will come into contact with the stove or other heated surfaces.
  • Unplug all electrical appliances before repairing or cleaning.
  • Unplug an appliance that has fallen into water before attempting to retrieve it.
  • Turn off a light before replacing the bulb.
  • Never pull out an electrical plug by the cord.
  • Do not stick any object other than an electrical plug into an outlet.
  • Replace frayed or cracked electrical cords with new ones; you can purchase these at your local hardware store.
  • Keep electrical cords out from under rugs and heavy furniture.
  • Do not overload outlets with too many appliances; make use of other outlets in the room.
  • When outside, use only extension cords that are approved for outdoor use.
  • Use a long extension cord rather than using several shorter lengths.
  • Keep outdoor wiring on a separate circuit.
  • Know the location of the main electrical switch in the home.
  • Smoke detectors should be in every bedroom.  If powered by electricity, have a battery backup in case of power failure.
